Gambling in Canada
The history of gambling is only as good as the sum of its parts. Every game has its own history, and they come from places spread out all over the globe; some from the Far East in China, others from European countries at various times. Some games were played among the common people, while others were reserved for royalty. Casinos in Canada are a relatively new thing and the
Canadian online casino has only been around for the last decade. The history of gambling in Canada, according to popular tradition, only dates back to about the late 19th century, circa 1892.

Canadian Gambling, a Brief History
In 1892, the
Canadian Criminal Code banned all forms of gambling; however, since then the banned has gradually and slowly been relaxed. In the beginning, the ban was relaxed in order to allow gambling on behalf of various charities in 1900. In 1925, gambling in Canada was allowed in various agricultural fairs and events. In 1969, however, the Canadian national and provincial governments allowed lotteries to be used to fund certain activities, such as the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. The popularity of gambling in Canada spread from there as provincial governments realized that they could use gambling as a way to generate revenues. In 1980, Canada's first year-round charity casino, Cash Casino, was opened in Calgary.
Canadian Gambling Breakthrough
The major breakthrough came in 1985, however. In this year, the Canadian Criminal Code was relaxed to allow provincial governments to set up computer and video gaming machines - slot machines and the like. Under these new mores, the provincial governments were almost entirely in control of their gambling activities, as all those involved in it were required to answer to them. Since then, the gambling in market in Canada has split wide open. The advent of the Internet added a whole new dimension to that market, placing
casinos online and therefore allowing increased access to interested players.
